“Who is staring at the sea is already sailing a little.” -- Paul Carvel

Our bodies are 60% water, so is it any wonder that one of our most primordial urges is to be on or near the sea? And more than any other mode of water transport, sailing speaks best to the “water gene” in those of us who crave water and wind.

Sailing was born of man’s need to explore his world, with oceans and rivers the earliest highways. Today, we sail more to explore our inner world and to test ourselves against the natural forces of waves and wind. Sailing satisfies our deepest instincts to harness the energies of the natural world for our own benefit -- to test ourselves in an uncertain environment, and prevail.

When we sail, we navigate two worlds: water and air. And sailing allows us to experience every variable in those worlds. To sail is to be truly free: you can set a course, or go where the wind takes you. Snug the sheet fast or let the sheet run as the wind fills your sail. Throw off the bowlines and run for open water to explore, to discover, to dream -- to let your spirit set sail and just…be.

When we sail, there is nothing else -- no boss, no deadlines, no noise in our head except the sounds of the water and the wildlife and the workings of our sailboat. We do not need a reason to sail; we need a reason not to.
